If the abyss is a concept of the internal, unconscious self, I wonder what that could mean.

They said that messing with the curse of the abyss ill disfigure a human, but specifically into a form that they 'desired' in some way. Nanachi was protected by a strong desire for her to live on. The hollows in the city lost their human form but their new bodies can do things to 'make' valuables they can trade for.

From my perspective, the abyss seems to 'manifest' the inner desires of the people within it, and I think for more than just transforming people.

Some have a crush f3tish. There are actually men paying women to crush small animals with their rear. On the other hand, I've heard multiple times that little kids crushed animals for no apparent reason than fun. In one case, it was a girl in primary school that stomped the class pet to death. actually you do, did you see all the stuff the balancing yoinked outta that lil pink thingy? one little fluffy wuffy pet getting squished but not dying, then her crying and upset about it, JUST that unbalanced the value of the pink thingy. everything it had on it was disintegrated and turned into cash. then it's limbs and FLESH was ripped off to make up the difference.

like the mechanical guide-guy said, value is relative. every Hollow values different things. so, how does the village's balancer weigh the value of objects, or emotions, or anything exchanged between persons? or the value of a person?

ah, but when your companion/party member is the vet... does that mean the pink thingy was paying your party member personally? because since the girl's the party leader, and she got paid... was that compensation to the 'owner' of the pet... the party as a whole... or just politely paying the vet's boss for its services?

This part is always a bit iffy to me, but if I recall right: the village itself is alive, and can "read" how much value something has, based on how much it is treasured? So the way Riko freaked out AND how much she loves Meinya as Prushka's former pet, all that was taken into consideration. Anything connected to Prushka, of course, the value would be extreme.

Though I agree, not like Meinya was ripped in half, and most damage was fixed in an instant (though Nanachi does have medical training, and is familiar with Bondrewd's creations, so possibly no one else would have figured it out so fast). Having a body part ripped off seems extreme.

But it could also be the fact that Meinya belonged to someone else when it was damaged. Damaging another's property is a huge no-no in this village (maybe the "hand" being ripped off is minimum repayment for that, frankly... if so, it's a good thing Riko didn't damage her mother's notes when she grabbed them). In most cases. Though there are convenient examples of this being ignored. Part of why it's so hard to define the village's rules, they don't always seem to apply. And pretty sure it's outright stated that some words in their language only mean certain things fifty percent of the time, so good luck with that.

Like in any economics model the value is likely determined by demand. Rico's value is high as determined by the high demand for her (according to Majikaja), the higher number of people/beings willing to trade for her or the more value they're willing to trade for her the higher her value is. And I wouldn't rule out the possibility that because Rico's value is so high and she owns Meinya, that actually added on top of Meinya's inherent value. If it's based on demand it's all about perceived value after all.

I wouldn't be surprised if the mechanism/being that implements the balancing is related to the curse which Nanachi can, IIRC, use to read the intentions of beings in her surroundings. The balancing, and/or the being implementing it, could be some manifestation of the curse which can understand how other being perceive value.

My guy if someone squeezed your kid so hard their eye and anus popped out you would not find it unreasonable for them to be disassembled and everything they have ever done to anyone else repaid. The main party wasnt the only people that got paid clearly that hollow has wronged others and the market finally decided to step in and end the abusive little shits reign of terror.

hmmm... well... i'm not sure how or why the Balancing 'thought' the crowd/peanut gallery needed compensation. but perhaps you're right, lil Pinky there has been a bit naughty. maybe whatever it had done in the past was well within the 'value' it inherently had as a person. but after physical harm and emotional trauma on the party's pet, that 'value' went negative to what lil Pinky owed.

Think they just took everything it had to make up the balance. The only way to make up a value is an agreed upon price with each other. Didn't seem to bother the thing it'd be killed but the possessions that were taken destroyed and turned into currency being lost. I think the Golden City is a good name for the place. The place seems to be all about material values. The Kaja guide seems to also have no actual body but is made up of smells. His major desires are to have a body so it's obvious that Rika is extremely valuable to kaja like him.

the pet has immense value to Riko so the market balanced it according to how much she would sell it for (well only part of its value since it was only broken not stolen). there is no cheating. Sure the value depend on the seller but I dont think the seller can lie about the value, under this system a rock could be worth many lives but it doesnt mean someone would buy it, people just have to be careful with other people things.
